Unprecedented Global Demand for Chrysler PT Cruiser Accelerates Availability: |
Auburn Hills, Mich., March 20, 2000 - In response to unprecedented worldwide demand for the new Chrysler PT Cruiser, DaimlerChrysler Corporation will supplement production of its all new, segment-defining vehicle, using its Eurostar facility in Graz, Austria to produce European and rest-of-world versions. Eurostar joins the Toluca Assembly Plant in Toluca, Mexico, as the second DaimlerChrysler facility to produce the PT Cruiser.
Since the debut of the Chrysler PT Cruiser in January 1999, DaimlerChrysler has received more than 300,000 requests for information about the vehicle, and has taken numerous orders. The additional production volume at Eurostar will help satisfy demand in Europe and rest-of-world markets, which will allow the company to allocate more vehicles to the U.S., where demand is the strongest.
The Toluca Assembly Plant is currently ramping up production of the Chrysler PT Cruiser to about 180,000 units annually, all of which can now be allocated to support NAFTA demand.
The Eurostar facility, which also produces the Chrysler Voyager for Europe and international markets, has the capacity and flexibility to add about 50,000 left and right-hand drive versions of the Chrysler PT Cruiser annually for Europe, Asia and rest-of-world markets, for a total of 230,000 units worldwide. Chrysler PT Cruiser production will begin there in the summer of 2001. Chrysler Austria and Eurostar have been in operation for about ten years.
Orders for the 2001 Model PT Cruiser will go through a normal "Build Out" process, and the final date for new orders will be April 28, 2000. DaimlerChrysler will then accept orders for the startup of the 2001 model again in May.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the Sequoia full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) at a press conference at the North American International Auto Show on January 10, 2000. The Sequoia, scheduled to go on sale in late 2000 as a 2001 model, will be built alongside the Toyota Tundra pickup at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, and will share the full-size pickup's platform and V8 powertrain. "It is appropriate that here at one of the largest auto shows in North America, we choose to launch the largest, most versatile sport utility vehicle in our lineup," said Don Esmond, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. "Sequoia is Toyota's first truly full-size sport utility, filling a key product-and-price position between the high-volume, mid-size 4Runner and the low-volume premium-brand Land Cruiser." |
![]() |
Significantly larger and roomier than the Cruiser, Sequoia will complement Toyota's
SUV lineup with the size, features, performance and pricing that are currently
in such high demand with recreationally active American families.
Sequoia will feature the same 4.7-liter i-Force V8 engine that powers Tundra. The engine will produce 240 horsepower and 315 pounds of torque, and will be the first Toyota truck engine to be EPA-certified as ULEV, or ultra-low-emission.
Sequoia's overall length, width, height and wheelbase ---as well as its interior volume dimensions--- will be larger than those of Chevrolet Tahoe and nearly identical to those of Expedition. Its third seat and rear cargo area are more spacious than both. Its ground clearance---at more than 11 inches--- will be significantly higher than both.
Sequoia will ride on a slightly-modified version of Tundra's stout platform. The independent double-wishbone-type front suspension will be nearly identical to that of Tundra. The rear suspension, revised for increased ride comfort and excellent control, will feature a five link live axle with coil springs. A four-wheel disc anti-lock brake system will be standard on all models.
Sequoia will transport eight passengers in three rows of seating in a cabin designed for roominess, comfort and safety. Sequoia will be the first Toyota truck to feature curtain-shield side air bags. And it will feature three-way seat belts at all eight passenger positions.
Sequoia will be offered in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models, with Toyota's vehicle stability control ---VSC ---offered as an option.

DEARBORN, March 16, 2000 - The all-new Ford Escape, Ford's newest sport utility vehicle, marks the company's expansion into the growing small SUV market. It has been designed to meet customer needs while providing good fuel economy, low emissions and an outstanding package with nimble maneuverability on the road and a rugged capability for off-road driving. The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices for the 2001 Ford Escape range from $18,160 (including destination and delivery charges of $515) for the XLS series to $21,335 (including destination and delivery charges) for the XLT series equipped with Ford's new Control Trac II four-wheel drive system. |
![]() |
"We believe the Escape will attract a whole new group of buyers to our Ford dealers' Outfitters showrooms - buyers who may not have considered, or owned, an SUV before," says Jim O'Connor, Ford Division president and vice president of Ford Motor Company. "The small SUV segment is one of the fastest growing in the industry today. The Escape undoubtedly will be a formidable competitor, loaded with many standard features that are optional on other SUVs in the segment."
The 2001 Ford Escape will be built at Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo., and goes on sale in North America this summer. The new small SUV will be sold worldwide in more than 150 countries. Escape pricing and specifications for markets outside of North America will be announced at a later date.

DETROIT - For the second consecutive year, Buick is featuring actor Thom Sharp as the "Buick Guy" in two commercials for the Century Challenge II, a comprehensive marketing campaign which showcases Buick Century's quality and value advantages when compared to its midsize competitors. The six-week event is led by two new television commercials touting Century's advantages over the Ford Taurus, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Running concurrently is an online sweepstakes (www.century.buick.com) with a grand prize trip for two to see the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team in Sydney. Other sweepstakes prizes include trips for two to one of 27 Marriott Resort Hotels nationwide and Buick Century travel bags. |
Also featured at www.century.buick.com is a Century test drive offer for a $50 gift certificate redeemable at www.giftpoint.com, which provides unmatched choice, functionality and security to enable consumers to do their gift purchasing from a single Internet store.
According to Century Brand Manager Anthony H. Derhake, this humorous, aggressive approach is the best way to get the Century quality message across. "Century is a proven winner in the highly competitive midsize market," said Derhake. "Our owners recognize that Century is a high quality family sedan that is also an outstanding value. Now we'll take that message to owners of our competitors." As evidence, Derhake points to a recent survey by The Polk Company which found Century owners to be the most loyal in the midsize segment.
Last year's Century Challenge helped increase sales 40 percent during the promotional period, and generated more than 20,000 test drives. For the model year, Century sales were up 11 percent. Century Challenge II will also be promoted with newspaper and radio advertising and with mall displays throughout the country.
Buick's Century offers the room, comfort and amenities of a luxury sedan at an affordable price. The Century 2000 Special Edition - with a black grille, exclusive aluminum wheels, cruise control, power driver seat, AM/FM cassette and more - is being billed as the value of the century. In addition to the Polk Automotive Loyalty Award, Century has been a Consumer's Digest Best Buy for three years in a row.
Chrysler's all-new passenger cars for 2001 play an important role in DaimlerChrysler Corporation's product strategy, being sold around the world in markets that include Mexico, Canada and Latin America as well as across Europe.
In Europe, the segment in which the Chrysler Sebring competes is typically nationalistic. This is particularly true in Germany where domestic brand vehicles represent 70 per cent of total segment sales, and in France where the figure is more than 50 per cent in favour of local brand vehicles.
However, Spain for example, is more open to imported vehicles due to the lack of a true national brand in the segment. In Spain, just eight per cent of vehicles in the D-segment are domestically produced.
In Europe in 1999, more than half of the sales in the D-segment were vehicles from well established brands, from which it is traditionally difficult to gain conquest sales. However, 47 per cent of this segment is taken by growing brands, which are closer to Chrysler's positioning. It is from here that Chrysler expects to gain new customers for the Sebring, contributing to the overall growth of the Chrysler brand in Europe despite being a niche D-segment model.
Main competitors for Sebring in Europe are D-segment cars such as the Alfa Romeo 156, Peugeot 406 and Toyota Avensis, along with larger D-segment vehicles such as the Volvo S70 and Rover 75. The Sebring also represents an alternative to mainstream' E-segment vehicles such as the Opel Omega and Peugeot 607.
The typical D-segment buyer in Europe is male; most are married and are empty nesters' whose children have left home. Often the vehicle is the main car in the household and 35 per cent of the segment is taken by fleet sales.
![]() |
Customer profiles show that for Sebring buyers the main purchase reasons are emotional (34 per cent)-with design and customer appeal being key factors in the decision. Secondary reasons are rational (27 per cent) with price and value for money being influencing factors. Sebring is therefore an emotional choice which offers rational reassurance to non-traditional European buyers who are looking for a new alternative within the D-segment. |

NEW JERSEY SURCHARGE
Revised 12/1/99
To recover anticipated increased costs of conducting business in New Jersey, as a result of recent legislation, General Motors announced to their dealers on October 1, 1999 that effective immediately they were revising prices of 2000 model cars and trucks. This "surcharge" is only added to invoices of vehicles that are shipped to dealers in New Jersey.
Should Ford or DaimlerChrysler follow suit, we will announce it here in the Purchasing News.
If a vehicle is shipped to a New Jersey dealer for delivery out of the state, GM is developing a refund procedure.
The option code on the GM invoice is "R6M - New Jersey Cost Surcharge." The amount of the surcharge varies by model. It ranges from $22 on a Prizm to $227 for a Cadillac Seville. Here is the list of GM surcharges by model:

Ford Motor Company - National Fleet Incentives
On July 2, 1999, Ford announced the following National Fleet Incentives for the 2000 model year cars and trucks. Ford is combining the National Fleet Incentives with the Fleet Marketing Credits for a "Total Fleet Discount" for each vehicle line. This is to provide an accurate comparison between Ford vehicles and the facing GM products for the 2000 model year. Their national incentives have been increased to compensate for the elimination of marketing credits to fleet customers for 2000. The "Total Fleet Incentive" should avoid confusion that may exist due to the GM fleet program change.
