GM FLEET INCENTIVES INCREASE FOR
2002 MODEL YEAR
On April 19, 2001 GM announced their 2002 National Fleet Purchase Program.
Many models offer a substantial fleet incentive increase over the 2001 MY. Models such as the Silverado/Sierra 2500, 2500 HD and 3500 series, which did not offer a fleet incentive in 2001, now offer up to $750. Tahoe and Suburban will offer $500; up from $0 in 2001.
Program rules and eligibility are comparable to the 2001 MY guidelines. GM will update their web site to reflect the new information during the first week of May. Please go to http://www.gmfleet.com and select "Programs and Incentives" found on the main U.S. page.

THE ALL-NEW 2002
NISSAN ALTIMA
|
On April 11, 2001 at the 2001 New York International Auto Show, Nissan unveiled an all-new third generation Altima sedan. The 2002 Altima features a new distinctive exterior design, sophisticated drivetrain, performance-oriented suspension and increases in all major dimensions. Exterior Changes The 2002 Altima is a much larger vehicle than before. The wheelbase has been increased by 7.1 inches to 110.2 inches, overall length is up 5.7 inches to 191.5 inches and the new Altima is 1.3 inches wider for a total of 70.4 inches. Height has also increased by 2 inches to 57.9 inches. Track has been increased by 1.8 inches in front and 2.4 inches in the rear for increased handling capability and a substantial look. A first for Nissan and Altima is the use of aluminum panels for the hood and trunk. Weight savings is 55 percent between the two pieces, making them easier to open and close. Body and structural improvements made to the 2002 Altima add up to a 170 percent increase in overall body stiffness versus the 2001 model. The increased stiffness and solidity increase driving stability and ride comfort while reducing noise, vibration and harshness. Performance and Technology Systems A new 240-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 with 246 lb-ft of torque is available in the 2002 Altima, the first time a V6 has been offered in this sedan. The 3.5-liter V6 is part of the VQ engine series, which has been recognized as one of the "Ten Best Engines" by Wards Auto World magazine for seven consecutive years. For silent, smooth operation, a new timing chain was added as well as a new dual exhaust system. V6-powered Altimas qualify for Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) status. Also available on 2002 Altimas is an all-new 180-horsepower 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder producing 180 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 25 horsepower and 24 lb-ft from the previous generations 2.4-liter engine. This engine, called QR25, features continuously variable valve timing, a silent chain drive and a balancer system that effectively negates vibrations without taking up a lot of space. All 2.5-liter 4-cylinder-equipped Altimas qualify for Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) status. A 20-gallon fuel tank provides a long range between fill ups - 400 miles for the 4-cylinder and 360 miles for the V6 model (EPA highway mileage). The 2002 Altima features an all-new front suspension with an extensive use of aluminum parts, which is eight percent lighter than a comparable steel design. The multi-link independent rear suspension of the 2002 Altima is adapted from the Japanese-market Nissan Skyline supercar and is similar to Infinitis flagship 2002 Q45 sedan. The rear shocks and springs are separated for reduced friction and the shock is in line with the center of the rear wheels, providing better damping and less harshness. In addition, the rear suspension is approximately six percent lighter than the rear suspension in the previous generation Altima. Interior Dimensions and Design The large cabin is designed to be among the best in class with cabin volume at 103.3 cubic feet, up 9.3 cubic feet from the previous Altima. All major interior dimensions increase from the previous vehicle, including a 1.4-inch increase in front headroom, 1.9-inch increase in front legroom, 2.6-inch increase in rear legroom and increases of front and rear hip and shoulder room. Nissan designers for the 2002 Altima created a new interior color and design strategy. Instead of standard interior color selections, there are distinctive "environments" that encompass both seat cloth or (optional) leather color and interior surface trim finish, including audio faceplate and HVAC controls. The three atmosphere choices feature colors of Charcoal, Blond and Frost. Wood-tone trim is also available in 2002 Altima. Models and Options The 2002 Nissan Altima sport sedan is scheduled to go on sale September 2001. It will be available in four different models the base 2.5, mid-grade 2.5 S, luxurious 2.5 SL and the V6-powered 3.5 SE. Options range from an automatic transmission to leather-appointed seats, audio systems and dual front-seat side-impact and side curtain supplemental air bags. |
DAIMLERCHRYSLER TO INCREASE PRODUCTION OF PT CRUISER
|
On April 23, 2001 DaimlerChrysler announced plans to increase production of the popular PT Cruiser. The company will produce 80,000 more units at the Toluca, Mexico assembly plant, which will bring production up to 310,000 units annually. The increased production will begin in the fall of 2002. DaimlerChrysler said that there should be more PT Cruisers available in the U.S. this summer because all vehicles built at the Toluca plant will be shipped to North American Dealerships. Currently, all fleet-ordered PT Cruisers must have prior approval by DaimlerChrysler Fleet Management before scheduling. The normal order-to-delivery period for a PT Cruiser fleet unit is 12-14 weeks. Whether or not the increased production will allow for a higher fleet allocation and a speedier scheduling process has not yet been confirmed. |

"With X-TYPE, we're changing the way a new generation of buyers will look at Jaguar," said Mike O'Driscoll, president of Jaguar North America. "The X-TYPE is a sport sedan that offers performance, style and luxury at a price that will challenge consumers' perceptions. With this car, Jaguar will be more accessible than ever, yet as aspirational as always." X-TYPE's starting price of $29,950 for a 194-horsepower 2.5-liter V6 with manual transmission includes all the typical Jaguar attributes: Connolly leather-trimmed seating, bird's-eye walnut trim, power windows, mirrors, door locks and driver's seat. A five-speed automatic transmission is available for an additional $1,275. The 231-horsepower 3.0-liter V6, starting at $35,950, includes the same features as the 2.5-liter, adding the larger engine and a no-cost choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Options are packaged for ease of ordering, based on expected popularity. The X1 Premium package ($2,500) includes a glass sunroof, 70/30 split folding rear seat, power passenger seat, electrochromic rearview mirror, Reverse Park Control and Homelink-compatible garage/gate opener. The X2 Sport package ($2,000) includes gray-stained bird's-eye maple wood trim, special Connolly leather seating with sport seats, Dynamic Stability Control, sport-tuned suspension and 17-inch wheels with high-performance tires. X3 Weather ($1,200) adds heated seats, headlamp washers and dynamic stability control. A range of high-technology features are individually available, including Xenon headlamps, an Alpine Premium Sound System with trunk-mounted 6-CD auto-changer, a satellite-navigation system and JaguarNet emergency messaging with integrated Motorola Timeport cellular telephone. JaguarNet integrates cellular telephone and satellite vehicle location technology to provide both emergency roadside assistance and access to local information. All X-TYPEs will include Jaguar's comprehensive four-year/50,000 mile warranty, roadside assistance that includes tire changing and fuel delivery, and fully inclusive scheduled maintenance for the duration of the warranty. |

Due to insufficient volume, Ford will be dropping the F-Super Duty bi-fuel propane chassis cab after the 2001 model year. All orders in the order bank through the final order date of May 11, 2001 will be built. The F-Series bi-fuel propane pick-up will remain in the product line-up. |

The five-door 2002 Ford Focus ZX5 made its U.S. debut at the 2001 New York International Auto Show on April 11, 2001. The model is new to the U.S. and Canadian market, but the five-door Focus is the most popular Focus model in Europe. The ZX5 is expected to arrive in North American showrooms in the fall of 2001. Focus offers a high level of standard and optional comfort and convenience features. The long wheelbase and high roofline provide impressive interior roominess for up to five passengers and their cargo. 60/40 rear seats can fold flat against the floor to accommodate large objects. A 2.0L dual overhead cam Zetec 4-cylinder engine puts out 130 horsepower and 135 lb.-ft. of torque. The Zetec engine delivers power to the front wheels via a standard, crisp-shifting five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive transaxle is optional.
For extra confidence in difficult driving conditions like snow, rain or sleet, the available AdvanceTrac™ interactive vehicle dynamics (IVD) system monitors input from seven different sensors 150 times per second to ensure the car stays on its intended course. At the first sign of deviation, the system intervenes by either braking the appropriate wheel and/or throttling back engine power, to return the car to the driver's intended path. "Since Focus was launched in 1999 (as a 2000 model) in North America, consumers and automotive writers alike have asked us to bring in the five-door model from Europe," said Martin Inglis, vice president, Ford North America Consumer Business Group. "The 2002 Focus ZX5 is tangible proof that were connecting with consumers in the very competitive small car market." The Focus ZX5 will be manufactured in Hermosillo, Mexico and pricing will be announced closer to introduction. |
CHEVROLET TO ADD 2500 SERIES TO AVALANCHE LINEUP
|
Utilizing the Convert-a-Cab™ system featuring the industry-exclusive Midgate™, Chevrolet has created the only vehicle on the market that can reconfigure from a six-passenger SUV to a full-size pickup with an eight-foot protected cargo box - the all-new Avalanche. Chevy will add to the Avalanche mix a new 2500 Series truck, which will be available later this year. The most significant difference in the Avalanche 2500 Series will be the power under the hood. While the 1500 version of the Avalanche supplies ample 285 horsepower in a 5.3-liter V8, the 2500 Series will utilize the new Vortec 8100. This new Vortec engine, which has received high praise for its use in the all-new Silverado Heavy-Duty Pickup, will be mated with a 4L80 Automatic Transmission w/overdrive and tow/haul mode. The engine will provide 340 horsepower at 4200 RPM and 455 lb-ft of torque at 3200 RPM.
Also notable on the 2500 Series will be a 37.5-gallon fuel tank, 6.5 gallons more capacity than the fuel tank of the 1500 Series. A transmission temperature gauge, multileaf rear suspension, 16" forged aluminum wheels, and a 12,000-lb maximum towing capability are also available, as well as an optional snow plow prep package, increasing its versatility. The Avalanche 2500 Series will likely be purchased by consumers who have heavy-duty applications needs, primarily towing, which go beyond everyday driving. |
NEW TECHNOLOGY AND ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLE INCENTIVE BILL INTRODUCED WITH SUPPORT FROM AUTOMAKERS AND ENVIRONMENTALISTS
|
Washington DC, April 24, 2001 - Ford Motor Company, in an unprecedented effort, joined with a broad and diverse group to support proposed legislation providing consumer incentives to purchase vehicles that use alternative fuels and advanced technologies. The bill, which provides tax credits based on performance measures, will help remove the cost burden from consumers to purchase these new technologies during early market introduction. Tax credits will be available to purchase or lease a variety of technologies and alternative fuels vehicles, including, hybrids, fuel cells, dedicated alternative fuels, and battery electric. "This is the kind of breakthrough relationship between the auto industry, environmentalists and Congress that is focused on the consumer and will help accelerate demand for cleaner, more fuel efficient, vehicles in the marketplace and put them on the road earlier and in higher volumes, " said Jacques Nasser, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company. |
