FORD FINAL ORDER
DUE DATE REMINDER

Ford build out is here and ARI would like to remind everyone to have all final orders submitted at least 3 business days prior to the final order due date. This will help to increase the chance of production and it will also allow time for our order specialists to correct any problems that may arise during the ordering process.

Fords’ estimated final order due dates are posted in this issue of the Purchasing News and they include several recent revisions, as well as earlier-than-anticipated build outs. Please go to the main page of the Purchasing News and select "2001 Model Year Final Order Dates" for details.

TOYOTA ANNOUNCES PRICES FOR THE 2002 COROLLA

On May 4, 2001, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. announced that prices for the 2002 Toyota Corolla compact sedan will remain unchanged from the current model. The new Corolla, expected in dealer showrooms in mid-May, will offer more value with substantially enhanced discounts on available option packages.

All manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing (MSRP) for existing value packages are now well below $1,000. Prices range from $480 for the CE model to $935 for the "S" model. These value packages offer popular amenities, such as air conditioning, power windows and door locks, digital clock and AM/FM ETR with cassette player, in a variety of combinations.

Corolla prices begin at $12,568 for a CE model with a five-speed manual transmission and $12,983 when equipped with a three-speed automatic. The sporty "S" model carries a base price ranging from $12,793 for a five-speed manual to $13,608 with a four-speed electronically controlled transmission. The premium grade Corolla LE begins at $13,383 with a five-speed manual and $14,198 with the four-speed automatic.

Corolla is Toyota’s second-best selling car, behind Camry. It is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.8-liter, 16-valve, DOHC, all-aluminum engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) technology. This extremely lightweight, compact, and high performance engine achieves excellent fuel economy and low emissions.

Corollas equipped with the five-speed manual transmission deliver a city/highway EPA mileage estimate of 32/41 mpg. CE models with the three-speed automatic transmission achieve a mileage estimate of 29/33 mpg and models with the four-speed automatic transmission carry a mileage estimate of 30/39 mpg. The Corolla is to be certified as a low emission vehicle (LEV) by the EPA.

DAIMLERCHRYSLER LAUNCHES THE
2002 JEEP ® LIBERTY

Spring is here, and DaimlerChrysler is getting ready to launch its newest member of the Jeep line-up — the 2002 Jeep Liberty. At introduction, Liberty Sport will be priced at almost $3,000 lower than the 2001 Cherokee Sport. The Liberty Limited Edition starts slightly higher than 2001 Cherokee Limited.

Code-named XJR, Liberty was originally intended to replace the Jeep Cherokee. However, when the first XJR concepts were taken to consumer research clinics, results showed this new Jeep to be close in size and appeal to the Grand Cherokee. In order to give Liberty its own identity, designers drastically changed the proportions, resulting in an all-new vehicle. Influencing these changes was the overwhelming public response to the award-winning 1997 Dakar concept vehicle. With the code name changed to KJ, Liberty was given a more upright profile, with its wheels moved to the corners to maintain the short front and rear overhangs, and a track as wide as the Grand Cherokee.

Also influencing the Liberty design was the 1998 Jeepster concept. The Jeepster was a design study in capturing all the heritage of the original military vehicle, yet blending in features of the more modern Wrangler. The Jeepster was given a contemporary version of the trademark Jeep face and was a signal of things to come.

DaimlerChrysler will begin accepting orders for the 2002 Liberty and other models around the end of May 2001. Liberty offers a Fleet Purchase Allowance of $500 per unit. The Fleet Purchase Incentive and Total Fleet Program amount is to be announced.

For more information on the 2002 Jeep Liberty, please visit the Fleet Library at http://www.arifleet.com and select Purchasing News issue number 102 dated January 22, 2001. Or you can visit the Jeep web site at http://www.jeepunpaved.com.

GM IMPROVES ITS NORTH AMERICAN ASSEMBLY LINES

GM is trying to improve quality and cut costs on its North American assembly lines by getting more cars and trucks right the first time through the line.

Gary Briggs, GM’s vice president of vehicle manufacturing, said that the company’s direct-run rate has risen from 57 percent at the start of 2000 to 79 percent. The direct-run rate measures vehicles that make it through the assembly line on the first run without defects.

In the early 90’s, GM began trying to adopt a manufacturing system similar to that of Toyota Motor Corp. GM and Toyota have had a joint-venture assembly plant in Fremont, California since 1984. GM officials claim that the venture, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., has a direct run rate of 80 percent.

STUDY FINDS RED LIGHT CAMERAS YIELD REDUCTIONS IN CRASHES

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted a study that showed significant citywide crash reductions following the introduction of red light cameras in Oxnard, California. This is the key finding of the first U.S. research on the effects of camera enforcement on intersection crashes.

Injury crashes at intersections with traffic signals were reduced 29 percent after camera enforcement began in Oxnard in 1997. Front-into-side collisions - the crash type that's most closely associated with red light running - were reduced 32 percent overall, and front-into-side crashes involving injuries were reduced 68 percent.

These results represent more than a single city's success story. They represent solid evidence that red light camera enforcement will reduce crashes at U.S. intersections. Earlier studies showed that cameras reduce the offense of red light running by about 40 percent. Except for a few studies conducted in Australia, there had been little research on how the reduced numbers of violations translated into fewer crashes.

Crashes decline at intersections with and without cameras

Crashes declined throughout Oxnard even though only 11 of the city's 125 intersections with traffic signals are equipped with cameras. Previous studies of red-light-running violations in Oxnard and elsewhere found similar spillover effects. That is, the violations dropped in about the same proportions at intersections with and without cameras, attesting to the strong deterrent value of red light cameras and their ability to change driver behavior.

The cameras, which are being used to enforce traffic laws in more than 40 U.S. communities, photograph vehicles whose drivers deliberately run red lights. Violators then are ticketed by mail.

  • Leasing companies, banks, credit unions, other financial institutions and body modification companies are eligible to request national fleet incentives/credits only if the end-user FIN of the vehicle (i.e. lessee/purchaser) has met the fleet eligibility requirements and has received a FIN code. All leasing company and body modifier orders must include their own FIN code and the end-user FIN code.
  • Orders submitted with an end-user FIN code of 9Z999 are not eligible for fleet incentives or marketing credits.
  • A FIN code is required to order from fleet allocation pool.
  • To qualify for a FIN code, an end-user must EITHER:
    • Have registered or leased for use in their operation 5 or more new vehicles (any make or model) during the current or preceding calendar or model year, or preceding 12 month period, OR
    • Currently have a fleet of 15 or more vehicles, owned or leased (any make or model) in the United States, OR
    • Currently have a fleet of 5 or more vehicles, all of which are over 20,000 GVW, owned or leased (any make or model) in the United States (production allocation restricted to F650/750 vehicle line only).

In-Service Requirements

  • The minimum in-service requirement for commercial vehicles is 12 months or 20,000 miles (whichever comes first). Customers acquiring vehicles using FIN codes with or without national fleet incentives are subject to all 2001 MY fleet program rules, including in-service requirements.
  • Customers who violate the minimum in-service requirement outlined in this letter (further details on http://www.ford.fleet.com) are subject to cancellation of their FIN code and/or fleet incentive chargebacks.

Regional Discounts and Special Value Packages

Regional discounts and special value packages are not available with national fleet incentives, unless otherwise stated in a separate announcement letter.

Sales Reporting

  • Major fleet sales to commercial customers with FIN codes should be reported sold with a Delivery Type "7".
  • Fleet vehicles sold to independent fleet management companies, banks, or dealer owned leasing c ompanies who lease to a commercial fleet with a FIN code should be reported with Delivery Type "D".

Fleet Payment and Chargeback Timing Limitations

  • Payments

To be eligible for payment, national fleet incentives must be claimed within 1 year of the date of sale or lease.

  • Review/Chargeback Period

The review/chargeback policy has been modified for the 2001MY. North American Sales Accounting Dealer Audit Staff will review fleet incentive payments and process appropriate chargebacks within the latter of:

    • 2 years from the date the national fleet incentive is paid, OR
    • 2 years from the date the dealer/leasing company reported vehicles sold with the national fleet incentive

Unsold Units Remaining In Stock

New for the 2001MY, unsold units remaining in stock 180 days after the close of the program year will be re-invoiced to deduct fleet incentives. Dealers may reapply for fleet incentives on units ultimately sold to a fleet customer.

Other

  • Vehicles sold to eligible fleet customers are not eligible for retail customer cash drafts unless specifically stated in a separate retail/commercial account announcement letter.
  • Acceptance of an order by the ordering system from a dealer or leasing company will not constitute a commitment from Ford to build a vehicle. Ford reserves the right to limit production, cancel, amend, revise or revoke any program at any time.
  • National incentives, including Commercial Fleet Credits, Fleet Marketing Credits and Fleet Special Adjustments, will be deducted from the factory invoice on vehicles ordered from production. In general, fleet units should be ordered from production; however, Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers can request invoice adjustments on vehicles sold to fleet customers from dealer stock.
  • Vehicles must be delivered and registered in the 50 United States. Vehicles intended for shipment outside the 50 United States are ineligible for fleet incentives.
