CHRYSLER ANNOUNCES PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT ACTION ON 2001 MINIVANS
Thursday, May 31, 2001 - The Chrysler Group will conduct a product improvement action on 136,500 units of its 2001 model year Chrysler Voyager and Town & Country minivans and Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan minivans. The company will replace part of the lock mechanism on vehicles equipped with key cylinders on the sliding doors, an issue that affects only one-third of 2001 model year minivans.
Minivans factory-equipped with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), which make up the vast majority of the 2001 vehicle population, are not affected by this action. An easy way to determine if a vehicle is affected by the improvement action is the presence of a keyhole on the sliding door handle.
Crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shown that, under certain conditions, a severe side impact can cause the key cylinder mechanism on the sliding doors to contact the door release system. This may cause the door to open.
As a result of these findings, the Chrysler Group has decided to voluntarily contact customers and recommend that they bring in their vehicles for the improvement action. As of May 24, 2001, production has been modified to encompass the improvement. Chrysler Group will notify customers by mail or they may contact their dealers directly. There will be no charge to the consumer.
The Chrysler Group encourages drivers to check that vehicle occupants are properly restrained at all times.
SUBARU TO BRING ONSTAR SERVICES TO OUTBACK CUSTOMERS
Subaru of America and OnStar announced an agreement to offer OnStar in-vehicle safety, security and information services to Subaru customers beginning with the 2003 Outback.
OnStar will initially be available as a standard feature on the top of the line 2003 Outback, the Subaru flagship of its popular all-wheel drive vehicles. OnStar-equipped Outbacks will include a one-year subscription to OnStar's safety and security services. Eventually the availability of OnStar will be expanded to other Subaru models.
OnStar core services include automatic notification of air-bag deployment, stolen vehicle tracking, emergency services, roadside assistance with location, remote door unlock, remote diagnostics, route support, concierge and convenience services. In addition, OnStar Personal Calling, being rolled out nationally, allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated calls through a nationwide network in conjunction with Verizon Wireless. Another new service is Virtual Advisor, developed in conjunction with General Magic Inc., which allows subscribers to access personalized Web-based information in a hands-free voice-activated manner - there are no screens or displays. Additional information is available at www.onstar.com.
TOYOTA ANNOUNCES PRICES AND FOUR NEW FACTORY OPTIONS FOR 2002 PRIUS
June 4, 2001 - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. released manufacturers suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the 2002 Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan and announced the availability of four new factory options.
The 2002 Prius remains unchanged from the current model and maintains its pricing with an MSRP of $19,995. Initially offered as a single specification with no factory options, the 2002 Prius can be ordered with a choice of several new factory options including a navigation system, cruise control, SRS side impact airbags and daytime running lights. In addition to the new factory options, two new exterior colors, Brilliant Blue and Blue Moon Pearl, have been added to the four carryover colors.
Prius carries an EPA fuel economy rating of 52 miles per gallon city, 45 highway, and an SULEV (super ultra low emission vehicle) certification which is about 75 percent cleaner than the ULEV rating and nearly 90 percent cleaner than LEV for smog forming exhaust gases.
GM, DAEWOO MOTORS, KDB AGREE TO FORMAL NEGOTIATIONS
May 29, 2001 - General Motors Corporation, Daewoo Motors Company and the Korea Development Bank acting on behalf of Daewoo creditors have reached an agreement to begin formal negotiations regarding the acquisition of passenger vehicle assets and related businesses of Daewoo Motor Company.
Formal negotiations follow more than six months of evaluation and business plan development. Both sides are committed to proceeding with negotiations as rapidly as possible. The parties will work to reach an agreement on a memorandum outlining the terms and conditions and the timetable and steps required for the completion of a transaction. The degree of GM alliance partner participation in the pending acquisition will be determined during the course of the negotiations.
Both sides are hopeful for a successful conclusion and have agreed to keep the content of their discussions confidential during this negotiation process.
FORD, GOODYEAR AGREE ON WAYS TO SPEED TIRES TO CUSTOMERS
Ford and Goodyear recently announced an agreement on how the companies will work together to assist customers affected by Ford's tire replacement program for all Firestone Wilderness AT tires on its vehicles.
Ford and Goodyear made arrangements to allow Ford customers to obtain Ford approved replacements for tires at more than 5,000 Goodyear retail outlets at no charge to the customer.
In addition, the world's largest tire manufacturer is also making arrangements to ensure adequate availability of approved Goodyear tires at Ford and Mercury dealerships through its own network of independent tire dealers and Goodyear company-owned stores. Goodyear has also increased tire production significantly at seven North American manufacturing plants to make tires available for use in the replacement program.
Ford's authorized list of replacement tires is available at the companies' two web sites http://www.goodyear.com and http://www.ford.com.
GM TO ADD TWO NEW ENGINES TO VORTEC LINEUP
General Motors will add two new engines to its Vortec engine lineup - a new inline 4-cylinder and inline 5-cylinder - that will power future trucks for the North American market.
The Vortec I4 and I5 engines are derived from the Vortec 4200 I6 engine, which was recently introduced on the 2002 GMC Envoy, Chevy TrailBlazer and Oldsmobile Bravada. The engines will be manufactured at GM Powertrain's assembly plants in Tonawanda, NY and Flint, MI.
The Vortec inline engine family shares approximately 75 percent common parts. The I5 and I4 engines provide many of the same features as the Vortec 4200 I6, including dual overhead camshafts and four-valves-per-cylinder technology. Additional engine features include a high compression ratio of 10:1, electronic throttle control, variable valve timing and coil-on-plug ignition.
GM has committed nearly $1 billion for the two new inline engine plants.
NHTSA REPORTS MAJOR GAINS IN SEAT BELT USE IN STATES WITH NEW PRIMARY BELT LAW
According to newly released state statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belt use has risen in 2000 for three states that enacted primary belt use laws.
Motor vehicle occupants can be stopped and cited by law enforcement officials, in states with a primary seat belt law, for not wearing their belts whether or not another violation has occurred. In states with secondary enforcement, the vehicle must have been stopped for another offense before the occupant can be cited for not wearing a belt.
States reporting the highest estimated increase in shoulder belt use since 1999 were Alabama (from 57.9 percent to 70.6 percent), New Jersey (from 63.3 percent to 74.2 percent), and Michigan (from 70.1 percent to 83.5 percent).
On April 16, 1997, ambitious national seat belt use goals were established. The goals were to increase national seat belt use to 85 percent by 2000 and 90 percent by 2005 (from 68 percent in 1996). In 2000, the overall nationwide estimate for shoulder belt use was 71 percent.
