Ford Unveils 2003 Lincoln Town Car

Ford Motor Company Chief Operating Officer Nick Scheele and newly appointed Lincoln Mercury President Brian Kelley recently unveiled the 2003 Lincoln Town Car – the first of three all-new or significantly freshened Lincoln models that will debut this summer.

The 2003 Lincoln Town Car Cartier L
2003 Town Car instrument panel

For 2003, the Town Car will be offered in Cartier, Signature, and Executive series, as well as long wheelbase Cartier L and Executive L models.

Improvements in design and functional attributes include:

  • More formal exterior, improved trunk stowage, quieter and more refined cabin and new comfort and convenience features.
  • A new frame with hydroformed steel front rails and redesigned crossmembers, which contribute to improved safety, ride and handling, durability and NVH. The frame's torsional rigidity has been increased by 24 percent and its resistance to vertical bending has been improved by 20 percent.
  • A new variable rate, variable ratio rack and pinion power steering system replaces the previous model's recirculating ball system for improved precision, reduced friction and lower weight.
  • New monotube shock absorbers, which are more tunable than conventional shock absorbers because the damping piston has more than twice the effective working area.
  • Powerful new four-wheel vented disc brakes with an anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution and a dual-rate booster that provides a "panic assist" in emergency situations.
  • Lower overall interior sound levels. At idle, the interior sound level is only 36 decibels and road; wind and powertrain sounds are muted even under full-throttle acceleration.
  • The return of the stand-up hood ornament (useful as a parking aid)
  • A secondary digital speedometer in the instrument cluster that can be programmed for English or metric units (for improved visibility and to help drivers who travel between Canada and the United States)
  • A 44 percent increase in total interior stowage, including a larger glove compartment and better cup holders
  • Dual-zone climate control, and standard heated seats (certain models)

"The new Town Car marks the beginning of a major product initiative for Lincoln," says Brian Kelley, Lincoln Mercury President. "In addition to the new Town Car, the 2003 model year will see the launch of the all-new Lincoln Aviator and a major step forward in the comfort, refinement and sophistication of the Navigator."

The 2003 Lincoln Navigator will be unveiled at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show in early January, and the all-new 2003 Lincoln Aviator, a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle, will be unveiled at the 2002 New York Auto Show in late March. The 2003 Town Car is scheduled for production on March 11, 2002 and 2003 Navigator production begins on March 18, 2002. Aviator production timing is currently unavailable.

Pricing for all three will be announced closer to launch.

The automaker said that pricing will start at $16,900 MSRP, including a $560 destination charge. The Vibe GT will list for $19,900 MSRP and all-wheel-drive Vibes will list for $20,100 MSRP, also with destination charges.

Hyundai to Offer Commercial Trucks in 2002

According to a report by the Associated Press, South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Company plans to begin selling light-duty and medium-duty commercial trucks in the United States in 2002. The company said it would support its products with parts, service and warranties through a dealer network supported by an affiliated company.

The automaker plans to expand its commercial truck line even further by 2004, using powertrains developed by a joint venture with DaimlerChrysler AG. DaimlerChrysler agreed to become the exclusive distributor of Hyundai trucks in the U.S., after buying an interest in the company in 2000.

However, Hyundai said it would give Bering Truck Corp., a company that had been building and selling vehicles made from Hyundai components, an opportunity to become Hyundai commercial truck dealers.

Volvo Releases First Photos of its New SUV: The XC90

The Volvo Car Corporation has unveiled the first official photos of its new luxury SUV, the XC90. The passenger car-based, all-wheel-drive XC90 is the top-of-the-line model in the Swedish automakers' new XC-line.

Trademark design elements, such as the V-shaped hood and the pronounced "shoulders", have been combined with a powerful stance and modern design. "We wanted the car to look masculine and confident, but not macho" said Peter Horbury, Volvo Vice President and Chief Designer.

The company said it takes pride in the Volvo reputation for safety, and claims the new model lives up to its standards. A key safety feature includes "technologically advanced" solutions in the area of rollover protection. The automaker also said that another high priority area when developing the new model was vehicle compatibility, or how well another passenger car tolerates impact with the larger XC90 SUV.

The XC90 accommodates seven passengers comfortably and offers a choice of either 5- or 6-cylinder petrol turbocharged engines.

The Volvo XC90 is set to debut at the Detroit Motor Show on January 7, 2002. Production will start at the Torslanda assembly plant in Sweden in 2002.

IIHS Marks Improvement in Trailblazer and Ram 1500 Bumpers

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently released new 5-mph crash test results, which showed an improvement in overall bumper performance for the Chevy Trailblazer SUV and the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup.

Four bumper tests were conducted including front-and rear-into-flat barrier plus two localized impacts, front-into-angle-barrier and rear-into-pole. The Institutes' 5-mph crash tests are designed to assess bumper performance during the types of minor impacts that frequently occur in commuter traffic and parking lots.

The 2002 Chevy Trailblazer, which received an "acceptable" rating, sustained a total of $2,445 in damage during the four crash tests. All of the vehicle damage was confined to the bumper, sparing the body and frame. The results mark an improvement over the vehicles' predecessor - the Chevy Blazer, which received a "poor" rating, the IIHS said.

The 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup sustained $3,843 worth of total damages, which is less than half as much as the 2001 model in the same tests. Damage to the 2002 model was also confined to the bumper system only. The 2002 Ram 1500 is now rated "marginal", improving from the previous model years' "poor" rating.

For more 5-mph crash test results, please visit the IIHS website at http://www.highwaysafety.org/vehicle_ratings/low_speed.htm.

2002 Jeep Liberty Wins Design and Engineering Award

Popular Mechanics recently presented DaimlerChrysler Corporation with a Design and Engineering Award recognizing excellence in engineering, design and innovation for the all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty.

The Jeep Liberty features an all-new coil spring independent front suspension combined with link-coil rear suspension to provide off-road capability and a new level of on-road ride and handling. It is the first Jeep vehicle to offer rack and pinion steering, which is tuned to give the driver precise control and positive feedback on-road, with enhanced durability for off-road use. The Jeep Liberty also features a patented single-action swing gate/flipper glass system.

"Our Popular Mechanics Design & Engineering Award winners rank among the greatest innovators of the year, and their winning entries are proof," said Joe Oldham, Editor-In-Chief, Popular Mechanics. "The all-new Jeep Liberty's unique four-wheel drive system makes this vehicle a true Jeep with legendary 4x4 capability for off-road driving and refined on-road handling, which makes it stand apart from the less capable sport-utility vehicles."

Motor Trend Crowns 2002 Ford Thunderbird "Car of the Year"

The prestigious and highly coveted Motor Trend "Car of the Year" award was again given to the Ford Thunderbird, the models' fourth time wearing the crown.  This years' winner was announced at the Motor Trend International Autoshow in Las Vegas on November 21, 2001.

The 2002 Thunderbird faced stiff competition with the largest group of contenders (27) ever to compete for the title. In identifying the winner, Motor Trend's editorial staff considered factors including design, engineering, quality, interior, special features, everyday livability, safety, performance and value.

"Ford can be proud of its modern-day reprise of a powerful American tradition," said Motor Trend Manager of Editorial Development Kevin Smith. "Not only is the Thunderbird handsome to look at, pleasing to drive, and fun to just think about, it's also a milestone development on the automotive landscape. We think it is the most significant new car for 2002 and earns its place as Motor Trend Car of the Year."

Motor Trend
magazine first handed the Thunderbird its Car of the Year award in 1958, noting Ford's totally new concept in interior packaging. The Thunderbird also won the award in 1987 and 1989.

Nissan Reveals Future Minivan Concept

Nissan recently revealed illustrations of its Next Generation Quest Concept, which will make its world debut at the North American International Autoshow in January 2002.

The Quest Concept features a long cabin, a unique wraparound glass treatment and 20-inch tires to emphasize its performance capabilities. It also features a power operated bi-fold tailgate for easy cargo access, a glass roof to illuminate the cabin, a "pop-up" roof rack and highly efficient fiber optic headlights.

The Next Generation Quest Concept

The interior was designed for comfort and convenience with an innovative instrument panel layout, centralized information center, high-tech rear seat entertainment system and a stylish seating design that accommodates six people.

Future plans, if any, for a production version of the Quest Concept are unknown at this time.

  • Taurus/Sable

A $450 Commercial Fleet Credit is available on all Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models. Option code (20F) should be used to obtain this invoice credit. This is available in addition to the $600 National Fleet Incentive.

  • Crown Victoria
  • A $546 Commercial Fleet Credit is available on selected Crown Victoria models (Commercial Fleet Series P70). This credit is in addition to the $600 National Fleet Incentive. Ordering code (56S) (which will also generate the $600 National Fleet incentive) should be used to obtain this credit.

Fleet Marketing Credit

  • A Fleet Marketing Credit is available on all eligible fleet vehicles, except the F650/F750 Medium Truck. The Fleet Marketing Credit is available in addition to the National Incentive.

2002 MY Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Incentives

Retail Greater Than Fleet Program

When National Retail Customer Cash Incentives exceed the combination of National Fleet Incentives, Commercial Fleet Credits, Early Order Incentives and Special Fleet Account Credits, the Retail Greater than Fleet Program is available. Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers can claim Retail Greater Than Fleet incentives on behalf of their eligible fleet customers. The Ford Fleet Website, http://www.fleet.ford.com, lists current payment amounts by vehicle line.

FIN Requirement

  • A Ford Fleet Identification Number (FIN) is required to qualify for National Fleet Incentives and special fleet credits and adjustments (e.g. Taurus 20F Credit). Fleet accounts may apply for a FIN code by calling 1-800-34-FLEET.
  • Leasing companies, banks, credit unions, other financial institutions and body modification companies are eligible to request national fleet incentives/credits only if the end-user FIN of the vehicle (i.e. lessee/purchaser) has met the fleet eligibility requirements and has received a FIN code. All leasing company and body modifier orders must include their own FIN code and the end-user FIN code. (Requirement applies to units ordered from production OR sold out of stock.)
  • Orders submitted with an end-user FIN code of 9Z999 are not eligible for fleet incentives or marketing credits.
  • A FIN code is required to order from fleet allocation pool.
  • To qualify for a FIN code, an end-user must EITHER:
    • Have registered or leased for use in their operation 5 or more new vehicles (any make or model) during the current or preceding calendar or model year, or preceding 12 month period, OR
    • Currently have a fleet of 15 or more vehicles, owned or leased (any make or model) in the United States, OR
    • Currently have a fleet of 5 or more vehicles, all of which are over 20,000 GVW, owned or leased (any make or model) in the United States (production allocation restricted to F650/750 vehicle line only).

In-Service Requirements

  • The minimum in-service requirement for commercial vehicles is 12 months or 20,000 miles (whichever comes first). Customers acquiring vehicles using FIN codes with or without national fleet incentives are subject to all 2002MY fleet program rules, including in-service requirements.
  • Customers who violate the minimum in-service requirement outlined in this letter (further details on http://www.ford.fleet.com) are subject to cancellation of their FIN code and/or fleet incentive charge-backs.

Regional Discounts and Special Value Packages

Regional discounts and special value packages are not available with national fleet incentives, unless otherwise stated in a separate announcement letter.

Sales Reporting

  • Major fleet sales to commercial customers with FIN codes should be reported sold with a Delivery Type "7".
  • Fleet vehicles sold to independent fleet management companies, banks, or dealer owned leasing companies who lease to a commercial fleet with a FIN code should be reported with Delivery Type "D".

Fleet Payment and Chargeback Timing Limitations

  1. Payments
  2. To be eligible for payment, national fleet incentives must be claimed within 1 year of the date of sale or lease.

  3. Review/Charge-back Period

The review/charge-back period remains unchanged for 2002MY. North American Sales Accounting Dealer Audit Staff will review fleet incentive payments and process appropriate charge-backs within the latter of:

    • 2 years from the date the national fleet incentive is paid, OR
    • 2 years from the date the dealer/leasing company reported vehicles sold with the national fleet incentive

Unsold Units Remaining In Stock

Unsold units remaining in stock 180 days after the close of the program year will be re-invoiced to deduct fleet incentives. Dealers may reapply for fleet incentives on units ultimately sold to a fleet customer.

Other

  • Regional discounts, special value packages, customer cash drafts, APR and Special RCL Lease Rates are not available with national fleet incentives, unless otherwise stated in a separate program announcement.
  • Acceptance of an order by the ordering system from a dealer or leasing company will not constitute a commitment from Ford to build a vehicle. Ford reserves the right to limit production, cancel, amend, revise or revoke any program at any time.
  • National incentives, including Commercial Fleet Credits, Fleet Marketing Credits and Fleet Special Adjustments, will be deducted from the factory invoice on vehicles ordered from production. In general, fleet units should be ordered from production; however, Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers can request invoice adjustments on vehicles sold to fleet customers from dealer stock.
  • Vehicles must be delivered and registered in the 50 United States. Vehicles intended for shipment outside the 50 United States are ineligible for fleet incentives.
