Both trucks come with a 169-inch wheelbase, Vortec 8100MD V-8 and an Allison 1000 Series five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. Three larger wheelbases are available with the C4500, four with the C5500. A Duramax 6600 V-8 turbo diesel engine is available and a ZF six-speed manual transmission is available with both gas and diesel engines. The C6500 starts at $46,295, the C7500 at $47,245, the C8500 single axle at $62,595 and the C8500 Tandem (with dual rear axles) at $72,140. These prices include destination charge but exclude tire weight tax and other taxes. The C6500/7500/8500 comes with a standard 194-inch wheelbase. The C6500 and C7500 have a standard 8.1-liter Vortec 8100MD V-8 gasoline engine and Allison 2000 Series five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. All of the crew cabs come with standard five-person seating, with two high-back bucket seats in front and a bench seat in the rear. A front two-person passenger seat, to accommodate an additional passenger, is available. The trucks also offer improved visibility and better turning diameter along with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes for improved safety and maneuverability. The Kodiak/TopKick crew cabs are easy to upfit because they are engineered with features that allow for a wide range of vocational applications, GM said. They feature straight, flat frame rails at an industry-standard 34-inch width in a variety of materials. Production of the 2003 Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick crew cabs began in December 2002 at the General Motors truck plant in Flint, Mich. |
Chrysler's all-new Crossfire Sports Coupe was developed in just 24 months after a concept version of the car was revealed at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. A production version was unveiled one year later at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show. Crossfire will go on sale in mid-summer of 2003 as a 2004 model. "The initial public response to our Chrysler Crossfire concept vehicle was overwhelming," said Larry Achram,Vice President, Advance Vehicle Engineering. "Once we established a solid business case for bringing this car to market, we worked closely with our colleagues in Germany to move the car swiftly from concept to reality." The 2004 Chrysler Crossfire is a low-slung, two seat sports coupe. Under the hood is a 3.2-liter V-6, 18-valve SOHC engine available with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick® Following are some additional highlights of the all-new 2004 Chrysler Crossfire:

Subaru Announces New Model Pricing
Subaru of America, Inc. has announced Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price for three new 2003 model year vehicles. The 2003 Baja Sport, 2003 Outback with Premium Audio System and Outback H6-3.0 Wagon models are the latest additions to the Subaru line of crossover vehicles. Baja Sport Baja Sport retains most of the more than 60 standard features found on the original Baja model, such as air conditioning, power moonroof, power windows, mirrors and door locks. The Baja Sport features medium gray upholstery with black vinyl bolsters in place of the original Baja model's standard leather-trimmed upholstery. MSRP for Baja Sport with five-speed manual transmission is $21,995 and $22,795 with optional four-speed electronic automatic transmission. Outback with Premium Audio System Available in both standard 5-speed manual transmission and optional 4-speed electronic automatic transmission, the new Outback with Premium Audio System offers the option of substituting the All Weather Package for a Premium Audio System. The system includes an AM/FM/Weatherband stereo, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, eight upgraded speakers and a rear sub-woofer speaker. MSRP remains the same as Outback: $23,245 for manual transmission and $24,045 for 4-speed electronic automatic transmission. Outback H6-3.0 Wagon Available with the same standard features as the 4-cylinder Outback with All Weather Package, the new Outback H6-3.0 wagon also features a 212-horsepower, 6-cylinder engine. Additionally, the model includes standard 4EAT automatic transmission, body color door handles, body color foldable large-type exterior mirrors, a leather wrapped shifter handle, leather wrapped steering wheel and an automatic climate control system with air filtration and ambient temperature gauge. MSRP for this model is $26,995. All 2003 model year Baja and Outback models meet all federal passenger car safety standards, with the exception of the Baja dark-tinted rear privacy glass. All Subaru models comply with Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standards and are certified for sale in all 50 states. |
Michigan Drivers Test New Safety Systems
In one of the largest field trials of its kind, General Motors and a group of partners will enlist about 80 Michigan drivers to test vehicles equipped with both forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control systems - two emerging technologies that could help reduce rear-end crashes. As part of the trial, researchers will study whether drivers experience fewer "close following" or "rapid-closing" driving situations that could lead to crashes, and if the performance of these systems meets consumer expectations. The U.S. Department of Transportation, GM and Delphi Automotive are funding the project, and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute is under contract to conduct the 10-month field test beginning this month. Although basic collision avoidance technologies are in the marketplace, no one until now has developed multi-sensor technologies that integrate both adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning systems. The test system is an improvement over previous versions because of its ability to reduce false alerts and detect slowed or stopped vehicles faster around curves, GM said. The forward collision warning system being tested uses electronic sensors, Global Positioning System technology and radar to provide audio and visual warnings to a driver who is approaching a slowed or stopped object too rapidly, or who is following a vehicle too closely. The warning signals the driver that he may need to brake quickly or make an evasive maneuver to avoid a collision. The visual warnings are illuminated in front of the driver on a head-up display on the windshield. The adaptive cruise control system uses the same sensors as the forward collision warning system, including a radar sensor mounted at the front of the car to detect objects in its path. If the lane ahead is clear, the system will maintain the set speed, just like conventional cruise control. When a vehicle is detected in the same lane in front of the car, the system will adjust vehicle speed by applying limited braking or acceleration to maintain a driver-selected follow distance to the vehicle ahead. This system also provides visual and auditory warning to the driver. If incorporated into regular production vehicles, forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control systems could help drivers avoid or reduce the number of rear-end crashes, which account for about 29 percent of all police-reported collisions.

Pricing Released for All-New 2004 Lexus RX 330
Lexus recently announced manufacturers suggested retail pricing for the all-new 2004 RX 330 luxury utility vehicle, which is available in both two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations. The redesigned RX 330 is 6.1 inches longer overall with a wheelbase almost four inches longer than its predecessor. As a result, rear cargo space is increased by 6.1 cubic feet. Sliding split-folding 40/20/40 rear seats and under-floor storage bins also help to increase cargo space. A larger 3.3-liter V6 engine provides increases in horsepower and is mated to a new 5-speed automatic transmission. The model can go from 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds while averaging 20 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway (2WD models). The four-wheel drive model features a new traction control system that eliminates the need for viscous control of the center differential. Extensive efforts to reduce powertrain noise make the RX 330 nearly as quiet as the ES 300 luxury sedan, Lexus said. Improved suspension systems, standard 17-inch wheels and tires, and a stiffer body structure provide better steering and handling than the previous model. An optional sport package that includes adjustable-height air suspension system with 18-inch wheels and tires further improves ride and handling, and provides automatic load leveling as well as aiding vehicle access. Safety features on the all-new RX include a new driver's
side knee airbag, multi-stage front airbags, side-curtain airbags and
a large new side airbag for the front seats designed to protect the
torso, abdomen and pelvis. Anti-lock brakes and brake assist are also
standard, along with a new tire pressure monitoring system and Vehicle
Stability Control. The all-new 2004 Lexus RX 330 will begin arriving at dealer showrooms in April 2003. |
