1999 CHRYSLER LHS

The all-new 1999 Chrysler LHS is designed for those who want a North American Automobile that makes a statement with its elegant styling, yet demonstrates the agile handling of a touring sedan. "With its graceful, fluid lines and attention to detail, the Chrysler LHS emulates the fine craftsmanship of classic automobiles, while offering a blend of performance and handling that is certain to attract a new generation of buyers," said Martin R. Levine, General Manager, Chrysler/ Plymouth/ Jeep Division.

Building on the design theme first seen on the 1996 Chrysler LHX concept car, the 1999 Chrysler LHS represents yet another concept-to-reality success story for Chrysler. "The new LHS reflects an era of high quality, hand-crafted elegance, that will be a very strong addition to the Chrysler portfolio," added Levine.

The all-new Chrysler LHS offers both increased performance and fuel efficiency with the new all-aluminum high output 3.5-liter engine that delivers 253 horsepower. Matching that performance is a specially tuned touring suspension. An impressive list of standard features includes world-class quad projector head lamps for a unique look both day and night, leather trimmed seats with four-way multi-adjustable front headrests, a trunk pass-through in the rear seat, heated front seats and the look of Swiss-watch gauges with electroluminescent cluster lighting.

First introduced for the 1994 model year, the original Chrysler LHS sedan played an instrumental role in redefining the Chrysler brand, while providing an entry into the upper end of the full-size sedan segment. The expressive interior and exterior design of today's LHS defines the Chrysler brand in the premium sedan segment, and provides the opportunity to expand the appeal of the brand for owners unwilling to pay exorbitant luxury sedan prices.

" The 1999 LHS builds on the Chrysler brand heritage of innovative engineering by offering even better overall performance and handling," said Levine. "It offers buyers a high level of luxury with a design that is even more sophisticated than the previous LHS."

The Chrysler LHS is expected to attract buyers with active lifestyles who appreciate the finer things in life. The agility, handling and efficiency of the LHS will appeal to younger buyers, while the luxury, style and interior appointments will satisfy the needs of the affluent buyers who want to make a social statement. The new LHS suits their desire for a top-of-the-line image vehicle, while providing more room for family, friends or clients and more trunk space for suitcases and golf clubs.

Pricing for the 1999 LHS was announced on April 15, 1998, at $1,855 less than the model it replaces. The MSRP, for the LHS, including $595 destination charge, is $28,995.

Production of the 1999 model started on April 6, 1998, at the Bramalea, Ontario assembly plant. This plant, which also builds the Chrysler Concorde and Dodge Intrepid, will add a third shift in July. The 1999 Chrysler 300M went into production on April 20, 1999 at this same plant.

VOICE-ACTIVATED AUTO PC'S

Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. announced on April 6, 1998, that they are working together to build voice-activated computers for automobiles.

Using Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, these new machines are expected to provide voice-controlled navigation, mobile-phone service and e-mail, as well as entertainment.

Auto PC's could hit the market in the first half of next year, according to Microsoft. These new voice-activated PC's are designed to free drivers from the button-pushing that requires them to take their eyes off the road.

REBATE COUPONS

In Mid-April, GM started to offer retail coupons of $500 to $1000 off the retail purchase or lease of new vehicles. On April 22nd, Ford announced that its dealers will accept rebate coupons from General Motors Corp.

On April 24th, Chrysler agreed to accept GM or Ford coupons and announced their own coupons for up to $1000 on selected new vehicles.

These coupons are for retail purchases and do not apply to commercial purchases by Fleet accounts.

TOP SAFETY RATINGS

Ford announced in late-April that the 1998 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis have earned top safety scores -- a five-star rating -- in government frontal crash tests.

"We're extremely proud of the performance of our Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis, but these ratings are no accident," said Robert L. Rewey, group vice president, Ford Marketing, Sales and Service. "We invest large amounts of time and talent into our vehicle development and the result is safe cars and trucks. And the independent testing done by the government continues to demonstrate our leadership."

In the government's test, officially known as the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), vehicles are rated on the protection provided to occupants in a frontal collision. Five stars indicate the best crash protection for vehicles of similar weight, while fewer stars indicate less relative protection. Nearly half of all vehicle occupant injuries occur in frontal collisions.

CHEVY TRUCKS POST BEST-EVER SALES

Chevrolet's truck lineup posted its best first quarter sales in its 87-year history, with sales up 6 percent over the same year-ago period.

The leaders were the C/K Pickup, Tahoe and the Suburban full-size Sport Utility Vehicles.

In spite of new competition in the full-size sport utility (SUV) vehicle segment, Chevy's Tahoe and Suburban combined to dominate full-size SUV sales in the industry for the first quarter of the year. The full-size sport utility vehicle segment is one of the hottest selling vehicle segments in the industry, increasing 11 percent for the first three months of 1998.

CHRYSLER FLEET
CHANGES THE GUARD

William C. (Bill) Glaub has been promoted to President, Chief Executive Officer, and a Director of Chrysler Canada, Ltd. effective April 21, 1998. Bill was named General Manager - Fleet Operations in May 1996, succeeding John MacDonald.

Replacing Bill Glaub will be Thomas R. Marinelli. He will direct sales and marketing of Chrysler Corporation's vehicles to U.S. Government and private fleets, and oversee fleet regional sales and company car programs.

VIRTUAL MANUFACTURING

Chrysler's advanced manufacturing manager Daniel VandenBossche, says that "virtual manufacturing" can speed up the design process of new cars and move them from concept to launch in about half the time it used to take to bring new products to market.

The process begins with digital images rather than with clay models or paper drawings. VandenBossche told a Senate hearing in Washington last April that "virtual manufacturing" has helped Chrysler identify design problems long before production, making it easier and cheaper to correct flaws.

OLDS INTRIGUE WINS ALL-STAR AWARD

Automotive Magazine awarded the 1998 Intrigue as the "Best Family Sedan" at a ceremony held in New York last April. "This is a great honor for us," said Darwin Clark, Oldsmobile general manager. "This is another indication to Oldsmobile that we are moving in the right direction and the all-new Intrigue is a car that can take us where we want to go."

The Intrigue, which was designed to compete with the best of the imports, has apparently achieved that goal as Automobile Magazine stated: "It's the first American sedan from General Motors that is plainly better than its competition from Japan."

"When we designed and built the Intrigue we aimed it specifically at the best of the Japanese competition," said Ken Stewart, Intrigue brand manager.
